Skeletons in Games
The Mario universe is full of ghosts and the undead and with Super Mario Bros. 3 we saw the introduction of Dry Bones! Dry Bones is gaming's classic skeleton but the industry has so many more! Let's take a look at some of the gaming universe's skeleton heroes and villians!
We start by looking at MediEvil and its protagonsist Sir Daniel Fortesque the undead warrior! His glory in battle whilst living was never realised as he fell to the very first arrow fired in the war against the army of Zarok, an evil sorcerer. The King of Gallowmore decides to make Sir Daniel a hero and now the undead hero is given a second chance to defeat Zarok and return honour to his name! Sir Daniel is missing one eye but surely as a skeleton he wouldn't have any eyes! He can also detach his own arm and use it to hack and slash his way through the game! For more Skeletal heroes look no further than the MOBA Heroes of the Storm with the Skeleton King Leoric. He comes with unique character traits: should you die in the game, and if you're like me in a MOBA you will, a lot, you will stay in play as a ghost! You can still navigate the battlefield and use some of his abilities! His death count is the same as any other hero from the series and once it runs out you will go back to being a Skeleton!
Sir Daniel and Skeleton King Leoric may be fighting the good fight but what about those other pesky skeletons? The Elder Scrolls Series sees Skeletons all over the place! You'll mainly find these in dungeons as well as the quasi-skeletons the Draugr. However, these undead menaces can also be found on the overworld and should you have the Dawnguard DLC for Skyrim you can find Skeletons all over the Soul Cairn! While we're on the topic of Skyrim and the Soul Cairn we can also find a skeletal horse named Arvak. Arvak is a horse you can summon straight from the Soul Cairn! Back to the enemies and we find ourselves in the world of Mystic Heroes as we fend off the Peons! Why not take a trip to Lordran in Dark Souls to face off against a few more of the brutes!
Remember the original Runescape? The Skeletons that our avatar fights off in this realm were pretty high levelled compared to other beings in the MMO. Surely a Goblin would be harder to kill than a Skeleton! Taking a break from huge adventures why not take a break in the blocky universe of Minecraft. Here you'll find Skeletons in the overworld and Wither Skeletons in the Nether. However, these Wither Skeletons are necessary to summon the Wither. A boss forged from the skulls of the Wither Skeletons! Staying firmly in the sandbox genre we find ourselves in Terraria and another skeleton boss! Head to the dungeon and choose to curse the Old Man at night to summon Skeletron! Slaying him will grant you access to the dungeon, a place filled with skeletons and where you would have faced the Dungeon Guardian! The Dungeon Guardian is powerful enough to one shot you even at end game level! The gaming industry has produced many, many more skeletons but the sake of finding an end to this post the sandbox genre seems to be a good place!
