G-man the Evil Mastermind

The face of Gary's Mod is non other than the mysterious figure who stalks Gordon Freeman throughout the Half Life saga, but could he be evil? He certainly is mysterious and he certainly holds a multitude of powers and abilities that seem out of place in the Half Life mythos!

G-man seems to be everywhere! If you take a minute to look around while you're throwing zombies with your Gravity Gun you'll most likely see him walking off screen and into the unprogrammed netherspace. Always findin some form of vantage point to watch you before he reports back to his "employers". He is a character wrapped in mystery, his motives are almost completely unexplained! Even his name doesn't really exist in the lore of the first Half Life, his name is only present in the games code and only then as an abbreviation for "Government Man". In the sequel, Half Life 2, he is named G-man in the games credits meaning that as far as the game's lore is concerned G-man is his real name!

Although he appears throughout the game in the distance he also appears in key monologues in the game but with his speech we can notice that something's not quite right. He puts stress on the wrong parts of words, he takes awkward pauses mid-sentence and changes the pitch of his voice as he talks! You could put it down to bad voice acting but it would fit his character, a mysterious figure who seems to possess unusual powers, which we'll get to, and seems hold much authority despite his mysterious and seemingly non-existant origins. He appears to hold no allegiance to you or whatever situation he seems to be able to throw you into! In the 20 year in game gap between Half Life and Half Life 2 shows that the ravages of time have left G-man completely unscathed! There's something quite inhuman about G-man, something eerie.

According to the vague scraps of information that you can find of the G-man in Half Life 2 you discover that he is contracted to the highest bidder. His allegiance lies only to the person who will pay him the most! He also seems to be pulling strings throughout the games, using you as his pawn. What powers does this mysterious figure possess? The first and most obvious in the game is teleportation. He can appear anywhere in the game! Wherever you are throughout the series he could be in the background, wether you be in the Black Mesa facility or anywhere else! He can influence time, at the end of Half Life 2 there is an explosion on the top of the Citadel, one which threatens the life of Gordon, is stopped, mid-explosion, by G-man! He stops the flow of time to save you! Wherever his allegiance lies you, the player, must be high in his regards! The G-man can also take people into other dimensions and place them into a form of stasis!

He also displays hypnotic powers and can control technology with his mind such as nuclear warheads! Whoever his employers are they seriously got there moneys worth! The G-man is a very mysterious figure who either wants to keep you alive but at the same time places you in dire situations! He seems chilled and relaxed when others around him are scared or fleeing and he seems to possess untold knowledge! Who is the G-man? Who knows but he certainly is a unique character not only in the Half Life series but also video games as a whole! Most characters have clear goals, they show some form of allegience and their abilities certainly adhere to the overall lore of the franchise!
