Satan in Pixels
Lately we've fallen into a trend of talking about many games at once and trends which feature across them like the grinding mechanic adopted by many mobile games. Since we're doing this why not carry on? Since the Festival of Horror has begun let's look at the father of evil himself: Satan!
The first game that struck me when thinking about games with the Devil himself wasn't the obvious titles like Diablo but rather the 8-bit style Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. This game is all about Cinemassacre's Angry Video Game Nerd and the game is hard! It's NES hard! I've personally completed all but the final level but when thinking of video game appearances I immeadiately thought about the hellish level "Thy Farts Consumed". The boss of this stage was none other than Satan! The boss fight is one of the easiest in the game but with that said don't expect an easy ride to this boss battle! With his defeat in AVGN Adventures where did he go? Like Dopefish he has appeared in many gaming universes, let's take a look!
From a hard game to one of the hardest the NES had to offer: Ghosts n' Goblins, this game was brutal in its difficulty! Two hits and you're dead, you have to restart the whole stage again, that's something I suppose! Many games of the era made you start from scratch all over again like Super Mario Bros. and Dick Tracy! This game contains three different Satans in the form of "Red Devils", "The Devil" and "Satan", the last two were bosses but the first one is the most interesting of the bunch! The Red Devil is one of the many reasons why this game is hard! They fly in irregular patterns making them hard to hit and each stage has multiple Red Devils! You would have thought people would want to cast these behemoths into the gaming netherspace! However, the Red Devils would strike again in the Gargoyle's Quest series on the NES and SNES! These frustrating demons were given their own series of games!
Other games like the ones in the Castlevania series are no stranger to appearances of Satan. The vampiric lore and atmosphere of the series. Dracula may be the star of the show but he's still in the dark lord's shadow! These are all fine platformers but we're taking in the full spectrum of the gaming universe! Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock sees none other than the Beast himself strum a few chords as you try to out play him! From what I understand he's hard to beat, probably because he has all eternity to practice and we're bound by our lifespans! Want more? Let's jump over to Tekken 2 and once again the lord of evil is back again as a boss! He seems to be the ultimate video game boss! Hopping franchises again and we find ourself in Final Fantasy II and you could never guess who pops up as a surprise boss in the Palace of Arubboth.
Here's a puzzler of an appearance as Lucifer appears in the Puzzle & Dragons series which features non other than Super Mario! If you're still not tired of seeing his unholiness then head to a Japanese arcade and find the trading card video game Monster Retsuden Oreca Battle! All of these appearances and we haven't even covered games like Dante's Inferno or Devil May Cry! He appears in the hugely popular Persona series and even Megaman X8! There seems to be no end to his video game excursions! From doing a bit of digging around in a similar manner to Shovel Knight we hit the Deep Web. This place is scary for no reason other than that there is no rules! A whole part of the internet not covered by Google or other search engines, from here birthed what is considered the scariest game of all time! But more on that another time...
