Hell Valley Sky Trees

Carrotman61's Festival of Horror has started, be prepared for a month of pure terror, or just reading me talk about random creepy/ evil things across the gaming universe! To kick off this Festival why not talk about something spooky? Let's not go full on horror game though let's think outside the box, or rather outside the Galaxy! We focus on them a lot around here but Nintendo love putting spooky goings on in their beloved franchise: Super Mario! Mario? Spooky? Skeptical? Good, but let me change that!

To start with let's take a look at the titular spooky thing: the Hell Valley Sky Trees! In Super Mario Galaxy 2 take a trip to Shiverburn Galaxy and play through the galaxy. Easy! Whilst adventuring remember to go into first person view and look into the background and at certain parts of the stage you will see three shadowy figures, watching, waiting! Leave it to the people of the internet to try and take a closer look, by hacking the game and going full Watch_D0gs we learnt their names and that there actually is a fourth figure who's a bit shy and hiding from Mario. However, they exist in the background of the game which is set to be a fixed distance from Mario and no one has actually seen them up close! Who are they? They're definitely not trees! They also appear in Grandmaster Galaxy on Pull Star Planet! They watch Mario forever, not daring to get close, what are they? Who knows. There was a creepy story surrounding these figures but it got removed, if I find it somewhere in the wilds of the world wide web I'll talk about it!

Want some some more spook from our favourite plumber? Of course! In Super Mario 3D Land head to world 4-4, the Boo House of this world. This Boo House actually contains a ghost! I know, Boos are ghosts but this ghost is a little bit different, head towards the end of the level and wait near the flag for 30 seconds. Eventually a spirit will appear in the forest in the background before disappearing into the shadows as if he was never there at all! It looks like Slenderman, while defending his 8 pages for whatever reason stumbled across Boo's Mansion before realising he wound up in the wrong game! You know those times in Slender when you can't see him and haven't for a while? He's in Super Mario 3D Land!

But there's even more to look at! Still in Super Mario 3D Land if you look through a telescope in World 1-3 and you can see a UFO go past! Although seeing as we've already seen Mario taking on aliens in the Super Mario Galaxy series we know that aliens exist in the Mario universe. What about more ghosts, that's what's scary! Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has three ghosts that haunt the game! It's one ghost per chapter and the first ghost appears through hand prints on a wall, or rather paw prints! Maybe it's one of the many ghosts of a Super Bell (the power up that causes the cat in the Mario series) infused defender of the Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario 3D World! As Toadette if you wait by a window on a certain stage a ghost will escape from it looking rather happy with itself! The final ghost appears under the tracks of a giant train flying through space!

Now we've finally kicked off the Festival of Horror we'll be taken to some of the darkest aspects of the gaming universe! It'll be like we're all living in Lavender Town, being stalked by BEN and the only game we have to play is Polybius! We'll be looking at horror games and terrifying things in non-horror games! Enjoy your stay!
