A New Glitch for Super Mario Bros.
Since 1985 players have fallen in the bottomless pits that seem to be very common in the Mushroom Kingdom as they guide Mario to defeating King Koopa and save Princess Toadstool (the older names of Bowser and Princess Toadstool). It was a novelty to find yourself above the stage in World 1-2 and then being rewarded with finding the Warp Zone was incredible! A useful hidden feature still used to this day. But 29 years after Super Mario Bros. was first created on the NES and the Famicom (Japanes NES) a new glitch was discovered 2014! Let's take a look into this rather unusual glitch...
This was discovered on the Famicom version of the game in which specific conditions must be met to perform this glitch, the first is having already beaten the game once around. This is important as most of the Goombas from the first playthrough will now be Buzzy Beetles which will be used in performing this glitch. The second is that the game is in two player mode with Mario reaching World 1-2 and Luigi reaching World 5-2. The player controlling Luigi must make it past the Hammer Bro in this stage and activate the vine from the Question Mark Block. Whilst the vine is growing, the player controlling Luigi must jump on the vine and allow the Hammer Bro to kill Luigi. After this death the player controlling Mario will begin to play in World 1-2.
In World 1-2 a vine will begin to grow through the floor of the cave (which should not happen in normal gameplay) as Mario begins the level. Where in the first playthrough two Goombas will walk towards Mario but in the second playthrough these Goombas will both be Buzzy Beetles. One Buzzy Beetle will be able to pass through the vine whilst the other will begin to turn in the opposite direction. The player controlling Mario must jump on the vine and as the Buzzy Beetle comes back towards it Mario will automatically jump on the vine to cause the Beetle to retreat into its shell and cause it to move just like a Koopa shell. Mario will then automatically jump on the vine again and repeat the process every time the shell passes beneath Mario. This grants the player controlling Mario with infinite lives if done correctly! This glitch may not help you on your first playthrough but it definitely is amazing how it took 29 years for this to be discovered!
